Hualngoram region is located in Chin State, the north-western part of Burma (Myanmar). The mountainous Hualngoram is connected to the Indian State of Mizoram by a bridge at the small border town of Rihkhawdar. Hualngoram in Chin state remains one of the least developed areas of the country as it has the highest poverty rate of 73% (UNICEF/UNDP/WB). There are 58 villages in Hualngoram and the people are Christians. More than 80 percent of the whole populations in Hualngoram are farmers.
Hualngoram has been isolated and discriminated politically, socially and economically by the government. According to the national household record of UNDP in 2011, Chin State including Hualngoram is the poorest area in Myanmar. The main challenge is the insufficient road and transportation system. Most areas do not have a proper road and public transportation. Many areas have constructed village access roads in self-help efforts and motor bike is a major means of transport in the area.
In the 2015 national election, Chin State had the highest voter turnout in the country, with the majority of parliamentary seats going to the National League for Democracy. Many people throughout Chin State feel that Burma’s central government neglects Chin state which had a population of just 478,690 according to the 2014 census.
Young people in Hualngoram often leave for other parts of the country or Mizoram State in India or overseas due to lack of educational and job opportunities. Consequently, people are struggling very much to find ways of improving their living standards, education and healthcare. Many people have moved into lowland areas such as Kalaymyo and Rangoon (Yangon) for a better life. Furthermore, many people have flowed into neighboring countries to secure their living, education and livelihood. However, numerous people believe that God’s promised land is “Our Hualngoram” and are still committed to staying in Hualngoram and survive naturally.
Hualngoram Peoples’ Organization (H.P.O) was established in September 2021 to support democracy by promoting human rights, all round development including education and health, and peace and security in Hualgoram area.
Poor health, no prevention, no quickly accessible hospital or healthcare in times of emergency etc. also are directly or indirect-ly related to poor transportation and communication. Lack of sufficient water is also another culprit here. No flushed toilet system, no health awareness, no vaccination, arriving the hospital
only when it is too late, malnutrition, etc. create poor health. Providing them health awareness, and health facilities is another important mission of H.P.O.
Education could be very much secondary when one is struggling for daily survival. One hardly reads nor thinks when he or she is hungry. Hualngoram and education are never known together. You leave the land to be educated, or if educated leave the land is the fact here. As such, many families left the land for a better education of their children, and those who pursued education outside the land never come back for a job either. The education in Hualngoram ends at primary school since children cannot effort to go to another village (which is above 10 miles afar) on foot everyday. So, education is also an important mission of H.P.O.
